“This is an issue that's near and dear to my heart. In 2012, at age 16 I was discovered as an undocumented immigrant by child protective services. At that point I was fully prepared to accept deportation back to Belgium (which is a decent country), because being undocumented here as a child was already difficult as hell and my status as an adult would make it nearly impossible to survive. Thankfully I had a supportive foster family and some friends at HIAS PA who helped and funded my application for DACA to delay my deportation and found a way for me to stay here permanently via a Green Card granted through the Special Juvenile Immigrant program. So to see that now, ten years later, new applicants to the DACA program are having their applications suspended indefinitely simply breaks my heart.

I had a safe home country to go back to, one of which I knew the language and culture and I still had some family to rely on, so I knew that even though going back was not in my best interest and the transition would be extremely strenuous, eventually I would be alright. But in most cases, DACA recipients aren't so fortunate. America is the only home they know, and the fact that old racist and angry adults are literally trying to rip away the little shred of hope these individuals have left deeply saddens me.”
